Your wife will be presented to you during a surprise turn out. Symptoms of this happening include early lights-out, arrival of suspicious crates at your company line, instructions to prepare standard items and a sudden emphasis by your commanders on the need to be battle ready and ever prepared soldiers. Chances are, the fall in will be around 3am, and you will route march towards the memorial statue beside the ferry terminal.

Obviously, you will learn to be annoyed with your wife.

She expects you to take care of her, to watch out for her, and worst of all, to scrub her down thoroughly.

Rifle Cleaning
The key areas emphasized in BMT rifle cleaning sessions are the gas reg, the barrel and the bolt carrier group. The ultimate tactic is, of course, using scotchbrite to simply scrub all the carbon off; but there will come a time when someone gets noticed and then you will officially be disallowed from using scotchbrite anymore.

Step one of rifle cleaning should always been soaking the affected area in oil. This by itself will make your task a lot easier. Attacking the pieces one at a time, use the tweezer and scrap the carbon off line by line.

Keeping the Rifle safe
When sitting down, always point the rifle upwards with the ejector port facing away from you. During field camp nights, you can experiment with different ways of securing the rifle. The most common and reasonable tactics are:

1) Tying a thin thread. This is not meant to stop your commander from taking the rifle, but to wake you up when they pull it away since they are unlikely to see the thread.
2) Using a thick thread. They will need to undo or cut the road, and hopefully you wake up before then.
3) Put your rifles between yourself and your buddy, and layer your LBV/IBA and Field Pack on top. Most comfortable, but only for people who feel secure about it.
4) Use your toggle rope. This is a variation of No. 2, with the principal difference being that the commanders won't cut the toggle rope as it is a critical item.

DO NOT:
1) Strip and keep the parts separately. If you lose any of them - and you will if you get turned out halfway - you will be in trouble that even your commanders cannot save you from.
2) Hug it. This is useless.
